My good friend JB (not Jim Bakker) informed me that Jim Bakker is now in the cereal business and hawking his new blend of organic cereal on his television show and website. You can read all about his yummy for the tummy cereal here.
Is there anything inherently wrong with Bakker promoting his cereal, or any other product he promotes on a TV show that he pays for?
Nope, and we shouldn’t give a rip about this cereal or any other products he sells to his devoted followers. He’s free to promote and sell whatever he likes just as long as it isn’t illegal.
Last night I was thinking about Bakker and what he’s been up to and the following Scripture came to mind;
No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
Is Jim Bakker serving two masters? I don’t know for sure but he seems to be spending far more time hawking products than he does preaching the Gospel.
Take a look at his website. What do you see the most and what do you see the least? There appear to be plenty of opportunities for the reader to give money in support of Bakker’s ministry yet there isn’t one mention of the Gospel message on the home page of Bakker’s website.
When you watch his TV show what do you hear the most and what do you hear the least? I haven’t seen the show in a while but all he seemed to talk about was the end times and the need to be prepared. His idea of being prepared was by buying things from his ministry. Jesus commented about this very thing when He said;
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Bakker seems to be promoting something a bit different than what his supposed Master promoted, huh? If you continue reading the rest of Matthew Chapter 6 you will see that Bakker’s ministry was built and is supported by the very thing Jesus told us not to do or be….
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Jim Bakker constantly preaches a fear based message in order to convince his followers to purchase products from him. Bakker’s’ supposed Master instructs us not to be anxious for anything….seems like Bakker has diverted from his supposed Master and gone on his own way.
Remember one other thing Jesus commanded His followers to do?
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Drastically diverting from the Master’s message is hardly making disciples. It doesn’t seem as though Bakker likes his supposed Master’s teaching’s, does he?
Which “master” does Jim Bakker serve?
That’s up for you to decide.
