Is Jesus Christ Jim Bakker’s Master or is Money His Master?

My good friend JB (not Jim Bakker) informed me that Jim Bakker is now in the cereal business and hawking his new blend of organic cereal on his television show and website. You can read all about his yummy for the tummy cereal here.

Is there anything inherently wrong with Bakker promoting his cereal, or any other product he promotes on a TV show that he pays for?

Nope, and we shouldn’t give a rip about this cereal or any other products he sells to his devoted followers. He’s free to promote and sell whatever he likes just as long as it isn’t illegal.

Last night I was thinking about Bakker and what he’s been up to and the following Scripture came to mind;

Matthew 6:44

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Is Jim Bakker serving two masters? I don’t know for sure but he seems to be spending far more time hawking products than he does preaching the Gospel.

Take a look at his website. What do you see the most and what do you see the least? There appear to be plenty of opportunities for the reader to give money in support of Bakker’s ministry yet there isn’t one mention of the Gospel message on the home page of Bakker’s website.

When you watch his TV show what do you hear the most and what do you hear the least? I haven’t seen the show in a while but all he seemed to talk about was the end times and the need to be prepared. His idea of being prepared was by buying things from his ministry. Jesus commented about this very thing when He said;

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Bakker seems to be promoting something a bit different than what his supposed Master promoted, huh? If you continue reading the rest of Matthew Chapter 6 you will see that Bakker’s ministry was built and is supported by the very thing Jesus told us not to do or be….

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jim Bakker constantly preaches a fear based message in order to convince his followers to purchase products from him. Bakker’s’ supposed Master instructs us not to be anxious for anything….seems like Bakker has diverted from his supposed Master and gone on his own way.

Remember one other thing Jesus commanded His followers to do?

Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Drastically diverting from the Master’s message is hardly making disciples. It doesn’t seem as though Bakker likes his supposed Master’s teaching’s, does he?

Which “master” does Jim Bakker serve?

That’s up for you to decide.

  1. Phil,

    Your take on this is the same as mine. One doesn’t have to be a Bible scholar to see something wrong with this activity or the prosperity gospel. Just a simple reading of Matthews gospel, the first book of the new testament, is all it takes. We are being bombarded here locally on radio by a preacher with an ad that says something like,
    “There is 200 scriptures in the Bible on grace, 300 scriptures about love, and 2500 scriptures about money and finances. Come and join us to learn about Biblical finances.”
    I can’t remember the exact numbers but the ratio is close. We know where this guy is going.

    • Hi Boyd,

      Yep, we are on the same page and have been for a very long time. I just got a bit sidetracked with some weirdos but those days are behind me.

      I’m afraid preachers like the one you mentioned are a dime a dozen and its too bad more people didn’t compare the teachings of the teacher with the Master they claim to worship.

  2. Phil the answer to your question is right under your nose…literally! It is “What colour is the sky in their world?” (BTW you guys don’t spell colour the same way as the Queen of England). Of course the answer is green. When the Bakkers look up what do they see? …Green! The Greenback! Jim looks up and sees dollars floating down from the sky. His eyes may be blue but his sky ain’t! JIm always thinks green. Remember when he was married to Tammy he thought the grass was greener on the other side of the fence. Now he has gone environmental. (Maybe you could even leave out the ‘environ’ part)! Jude 17-18 “But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
    Jud 1:18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. ”
    I live in SE Asia and Christian TV is non existant so I have to access through Skyangel web and have watched Jim’s “show” a few times for a laugh. Now I can’t handle anymore…enough! It almost seems like he half believes his own BS or he’s a very, very sincere and convincing con artist.
    Whatever he is just back to his old pimping ways. Who knows? he may have even conned the Grahams and authorities to get out of jail and then knew he would make a lot of money from his book on his repentance. Jim the scammer seems to know which buttons to pushto extract dollars from mainly naive elderly sheeple. I can’t see a lot of difference between Jim the Scammer and someone in Vegas playing the pokies apart from the fact that Jim always makes money.

    • This is exactly why I named the site what I did…I haven’t watched a Bakker show in years but from what I’ve heard from others who have Jim has returned to fleecing the sheeple….too bad huh?

      • Phil, the name of the site is brilliant and 100% appropriate! When one watches nature programmes like Animal Planet the predator sizes up the herd and always goes for the weakest and most vulnerable prey. The predator will look over the herd carefully and calculatingly and then viciously attack and rip the prey to pieces.The very worst of the pimping, pulpit wolves always prey on the weak sheep in the flock of God. A classic example is Dan Strader who preyed on elderly people in his father’s church (Carl Strader of Carpenter’s Church where they had the infamous Lakeland ‘Revival’).Dan Strader used his father’s ‘reputation’ and the ‘credibility’ of the church to con unsuspecting and trusting elderly parishoners into his worthless ponzi schemes that were supporting his luxurious lifestyle. Many were viciously stripped of their life savings and some like Roy Aldrich died shortly after due to stress and shock from Strader’s attack. Strader ended up with 45 years in prison and his appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Bakker appears to be in the same mold.He has coldly and calculatingly figured out he can sneak up on the weak elderly sheep who trust him. He mesmerizes them and fills them with fear and they panic.Then he rips into their life savings and tears apart their financial security. Once he has the prey in his filthy grasp he then cleans up the muscle and fat on a monthly basis until all that is left of the victim is bones.Then he is no longer interested in them.
        (A word to Jim) …JIm , if you ever read this blog, acknowledge that you are an outright con man and repent.
