Check out the video of one of my favorite songs and after the jump we’ll talk a little bit about this “old man” “new man” stuff…….
Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said,” I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do.”
Saul didn’t have much of a choice now did he. One day he’s persecuting Christians and along comes Christ, knocks him off his horse, blinds Saul and that’s that right.
All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, “Is this not he who in Jerusalem destroyed those who called on this name, and who had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?”
This can’t be the same guy we heard about could he? The people who knew of Saul of Tarsus and his reputation couldn’t believe their eyes or ears. They were amazed at the difference.
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
A new heart and a new spirit. A change if you will. The Holy Spirit now resides in you and will CAUSE you to follow him. Just like Saul you won’t have a choice and just like Saul your life will change from the inside out.
Did people notice a difference about you after you began professing Christianity? Were people amazed when they saw the difference in you like the folks were when they heard Saul preach? Surely they must have seen a difference in the way you act and speak right?
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
There is a key word in the Scripture above, the word “if”. If you are in Christ the old passes away and new things have come. Logic tells me that someone professing they are in Christ and haven’t changed then they most likely aren’t in Christ, right?
So what passed away in your life? What changed? The Scriptures are specific about this. There will be a change and it will be noticeable. People will be amazed “if” you are indeed in Christ and more importantly “if” Christ resides in you.
Is the old man dead? Are things now new? These are important questions as this week I’m going to use one man as an example of someone who claims Christ but hasn’t changed a bit.
