The Parsonage®, a website of Focus on the Family® has announced that October is Clergy Appreciation Month (source). They even have a neat party planner with suggestions on how to show your appreciation for the pastor and his family (source)
Sounds like another Hallmark Holiday to me but this ones OK because it’s run by a Christian organization like Focus on the Family.
My personal thoughts? If you need a special event to appreciate your pastor then you don’t deserve one…..
Peter reminds the elders the type of appreciation they will receive;
1Peter 5:1-4 NIV
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers–not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
That crown of glory sounds better then “surround sound” and lasts a bit longer. How’s that for appreciation.
Here’s a real gem if ever there was one, from page 12 of the party planner (source)
10. Support pastoral caregiving ministries.
Pastors do burn out. Even though you do everything within your power
to care for them, statistics show that your pastor or his/her family may some day need unique caregiving assistance. There is no shame in it, neither for you nor them. Facilitate such care by financially supporting one of the special ministries or denominational programs that offer assistance to pastors and their families. If and when it becomes necessary, cover any costs associated with renewing your pastor to full strength and restoring his/her ministry.
Like maybe the one that’s sponsoring this shindig…….
Here’s a thought…..
Why not every Sunday say a simple “Thank You” when you’re shaking pastors hand at the back of the church (do Pastors in America still do that?) I can assure you that will suffice until he gets that crown of glory.
Or, the next time you ask your pastor or someone elses pastor to do research for you, say “thank you”…………….
Or, the next time you call pastor at 3am to pray for your sick family members, friends or even pets, just say “thank you”………
See how easy that was……
