Hypocrisy and Double Standards?

Over the last few month’s I’ve seen enough hypocrisy and double standards among some within the Online Discernment Ministry Community to last me a lifetime. I must admit they talk a very good game and many believe these folks are saying and doing the right things. Today I’ll demonstrate a couple instances and I’ll let you be the judge.

A simple working definition of a hypocrite is;

Hypocrite (source)

a person who pretends to be what he or she is not; one who pretends to be better than is really so, or to be pious, virtuous, etc. without really being so

As I stated in my opening paragraph I’ve seen enough hypocrisy to last me a lifetime. I think it’s safe to say that a hypocrite is someone double minded, wouldn’t you agree? James has this to say regarding double minded men;

James 1:8 NKJV

he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Mr. Ken Silva is a Pastor-Teacher and operates one of the larger Online Discernment Ministries (ODM). He had this to say on another blog about an anonymous poster who happens to be highly critical of Ken Silva;

A better question might be what isn’t a part of the ministry of Satan on SOL and CRN. Virtually every article is an attack on believers. Not to mention a posting of a sermon by Paul Washer, who is the ultimate in works-based preaching.”

This comment from a “Bo Diaz,” who gives every impression of being an anonymous coward unwilling to use his/her actual name unlike e.g. you, me and Ingrid, appears to sum up how many of the commentors at CRN.Hate actually feel.

Frankly, I think it’s good that they come out of the closet and state what we’ve pretty much known they’ve always felt. As I mentioned in a piece concerning Rob Bell where it looked to me as if he questioned my salvation: We aren’t preaching the same Gospel. (source)

I happen to agree with Ken. I personally believe if you are going to criticize someone publicly you should at least sign your real name. It’s something I’ve been highly outspoken about in the past and will continue to do.

Okay. Now take a look at the following posting on Mr. Silva’s Apprising Ministries website found here. Please pay particular attention to whom Mr. Silva is giving a “Hat tip”. Why it’s none other then a predominately anonymous website called DefendingContending.com. I wrote about these folks and their anonymous site here.

So which is it? Why is it cowardly to criticize Mr. Silva “anonymously” yet endorse a predominately anonymous site that is highly critical of ministers and ministries. He even includes a link on his “ministry resources” list to DC on his “sister” site. (source)

Mr. Mike Ratliff has written a couple of posts recently that were highly critical of others using “character assassinations” rather then exposing bad doctrine and I couldn’t agree with him more. We just haven’t come to an understanding of what an actual character assassination exactly is but so be it. (source) (source)

On November 9, 2008 Mrs. Ingrid Schlueter authored the following post where she labeled adolescent girls as “painted little girls of Sodom” (source). Mrs. Schlueter publicly attacks Miley Cyrus and Ratliff stays silent? Why does the link to Mrs. Schlueter’s website still remain on his site? How is her attack on Miss Cyrus considered discernment or apologetics Mr. Ratliff?

These examples, and there are dozens more, are the height of hypocrisy and the very definition of double-mindedness. It seems in their world (Ratliff, Silva and Schlueters) anything and everything goes as long as you agree with them doesn’t it?

There isn’t any place for hypocrisy and double standards within the Body of Christ Brethren. These are traits found in the world and are not supposed to be a part of the Body. Jesus certainly wasn’t a hypocrite nor was He double minded and as professing brothers and sisters in Christ neither should we.

I think the shoe fits here don’t you?
