Homosexuality is a Choice: The Choice to Choose Sin

Tennis instructors get asked questions…especially questions involving sex. Kids are curious and the other day at tennis practice the topic of homosexuality came up……and being a Christian I stood up and said that homosexuality was an abomination to God because homosexuality is a sin. One of my students (former I should say) told me I was wrong because it can’t be a sin because “they” [homosexuals] are “born that way”!

These are kids saying and believing these things…..kids claiming to be Christians….they had to learn the “they were born that way” nonsense somewhere…..and as I will prove through Scripture they most certainly didn’t learn this garbage from the only source of truth…..God’s Holy Word.

Romans 1:26-32 NKJV

26For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers,30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Leaving the natural use of a woman hardly sounds like those who practice homosexuality are born that way. The Scriptures are crystal clear on what is natural between a man and woman;

Genesis 2:21-25 NKJV

21And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.23And Adam said:” This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”24Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Doesn’t sound like God intended for a man to be with another man or a woman to be with another woman nor does it even hint that folks are born any other way does it? In fact if we go back to Romans Chapter 1 passage we will see why folks weren’t “born that way” as the liberals are teaching our children.

Romans 1:18-25 NKJV

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.24Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

This passage demonstrates clearly that God gave them over….not created them.  If you are practicing the sin of homosexuality and using the “God created me this way” excuse then you are in massive denial. If you’ve been taught that homosexuals are “born that way” then you are being fed a lie straight from the pits of hell.

Of course I got hit with the standby line “you hate gays”…I replied that I felt the way God does about this issue and that God says homosexuality is an abomination…. “No he doesn’t” replied my student….Scripture agrees with me I replied….and here it is;

Leviticus 18:22 NKJV

22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.

It can’t be much clearer than that….and for those who will say that’s Old Testament law and we live by New Testament grace here’s where your beliefs fall apart….

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NKJV

9Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

God didn’t create homosexuals it is their choice….just like all who rebel against God choose that path…a path one can freely choose to leave by simply obeying God’s Word….

  1. It is amazing the lengths people will go to to maintain and justify their thinking! To take some of the plainest language in the Bible and twist it, as is done by those wishing to keep living this way, is evidence of a desire to wholly discredit the truth of the Word.

Gays do this the same way that suicide-bombers and murder-suicide killers do: THEY have no hope, so they seek to deprive others of hope.

I was going to write about something I saw on television years back. I’ll do it here; Openly gay movie director, John Waters (the guy with the slicked back har and the pencil mustache who makes the campy films), was being interviewed and mentioned that he worked in prisons counseling pedophiles. He mentioned that they were born that way and couldn’t help it, and needed mental counseling.

Instantly, a contradiction rang out in my mind — they often do…

Waters did not cry, “foul!” He did not protest the unfair incarceration of these men who could not help their behavior.
Waters, an admitted gay person, assented to the fact that a certain behavior was — in his opinion — inherent yet STILL worthy of imprisonment. Very telling… But no one challenged him.

Now, I don’t think God would label a BEHAVIOR an abomination, and turn around and MAKE you that way!

Even if homosexuality IS inborn (which it is not, in my opinion — great breakdown, Phil!), it can still be wrong. Based even on the logic of a prominent gay citizen.

  2. Excellent points. I expect the world to make errant claims like, “they were born that way,” as if that would justify behavior even if it were true.

But for Christians to rationalize away sin is galling. I know many people who probably know deep down that it is wrong but are too lazy to study the scriptures or too scared to defend their views.

    Keep up the good work!

  3. If you’re going to adhere to Leviticus, you should adhere to all of it, not just the parts that you pick and choose. Or is only some of the “word of god” infallible?

  4. Actually, ii is the homosexual that hates God (Romans 1:30) as that is just one of the characterisics that describe the reprobate mind.

  5. Jamie, with due respect, if you’re going to use the whole Bible as a weapon, you need to know how to INTERPRET it, not just read the words. As with a knife, use it properly and you can cut food, use it IMproperly and you can do great harm.

There are types, shadows, covenants, moral laws, idioms, cultural customs, historical narratives, civil laws, symbols, poems, images, prose, and many more literary forms that — to be fair to the Bible — deserves to be interpreted just as we interpret Twain or Homer or Shakespeare or Barret-Browning.

If everyone (even unbelievers) took the time to read the Bible as literature, being fair and honest with the author, we would have to filter through a LOT fewer of these specious arguments.

Phil: Well said Brother! How’s life and the new addition?

  6. Hello. I feel compelled to share my post on this subject… I found a sermon in which the pastor makes some interesting points… and, yes, he upholds the LORD’s Word on the matter.

    http://lavrai.com/blogs/2008/11/20/youre-right-jesus-does-love-you-but-he-hates-your-homosexual-sin/

And you can thank the fact that homosexuals are ingrained in every fabric of our society, schools included, and are constantly and deliberately sprinkling everything with their deceptions. — Haven’t you heard? — You can be a “born again Christian!” … Correct the young people. Show them these passages and ask them WHOM they believe — their SAVIOR and KING or the guy on TV.

    Peace.

  7. Even if certain ones are born that way, it’s still a sin.

Phil: Exactly….which was part of my point….a choice to choose sin…I didn’t word this as well as I could’ve.

Some people are born with mental illness or cancer. However, they don’t just shrug their shoulders and ignore it and accept it.

Same with the sin of homosexuality. I would not get caught up in the argument of whether or not satan attacked them with that spirit at birth. I’d just drive home the fact that born with it or not, it still is sin. Scriptures are clear.

  8. Neil,

Great points on Biblical law. I’m a theonomist, so I hold that while Jesus fulfilled the law – He certainly didn’t abrogate it. It reveals God’s Holy and moral character and that is unchanging.

I just ordered a bunch of books from American Vision on this topic. DeMar had a great sale…but when I see my books may be another thing. The staff I’ve communicated with have some serious issues. Two weeks after I ordered, they tell me they are just tooooo busy to ship them and can’t give me an anticipated ship date and no response to my emails. I can tell ya that isn’t going to fly for very long.

  9. I’ve been away from this blog and several others for some time now. It’s been hectic, and I would to God that Jesus would show up yesterday!

Excellent article, Phil. This twisting of Scriptures to justify the unjustifiable, and to defend the indefensible is just shocking.

But we will keep responding with God’s word each time.

Homosexuality and lesbianism are an abomination. Jesus Christ crucified is the answer to this sinful lifestyle.

Love to everyone in the house. I missed y’all, but never let you out of my heart!

Phil: Thanks Dude…we missed ya around here!

  10. Phil, Maxdaddy, et. al.,
Homosexuality isn’t a choice. Neither is thievery, lust, hatred, nor any other predispositon to sin.

The “church” has fallen into a trap of Satan because we are so biblically uninformed. Read Romans 5 and 6. We are slaves to sin and we need to be freed. This is the doctrine of original sin. This is the doctrine of regeneration. This is the ethic of self-control.

The world has good proof that many personality traits, including many sins have a root in genetics and environment. This has been established well through twin studies and more.

It is so sad that so few Christians have no answer to this other than claiming that homosexuals cannot possibly be predisposed to do what they do. This doesn’t disprove biblical Christianity. It confirms it.

Give these two answers to those who claim that homosexuals are predisposed to homosexuality and, therefore, aren’t responsible to curb their urges:

    1. That actually proves the Bible. It says we are all born sinners. Then refer to Gen 3, and Romans 3, 5, and 6.

    2. Actually the fact that they are predisposed to this sin calls for self-control, not license. For instance, a pedophile is expected to control himself. So is a thief, hot head, and a married man with a pretty secretary.

    Think biblically,
    Phil Perkins.

  11. Phil P., actually, your point number 2 about pedophiles is precisely what I was saying about John Waters: even though he believed pedophilia to be inherent, he STILL thought it was worthy of imprisonment.

I do agree with you that, of course ALL sin is our default behavior. In fact, I have said so many times to people in my line of work (entertainment) when we find out some prominent person is secretly gay. Given a life of wretched excess and unlimited opportunity, combined with an absence of the Holy Spirit, ANY of us are capable of being given over to our own (inherent) depravity. “There but by the grace of God…”

But a lot of times, non-believers don’t respond well to “sin” and “the Bible.”

  12. Phil:

On a recent “Tyra Banks” show here in the states, Tyra (a fashion model-turned TV talk show host)took to task a Christian mother who refused to attended the “marriage” of her lesbian daughter. This poor woman was brutely ridiculed in front of this national audience for her refusal to support her daughter’s commitment to self and sin.

What was even more painful to see was how this woman was unable to adequately defend her beliefs biblically and take a stand in the face attack. Ultimately, she caved into the pressure of the tolerance message and agreed to lovingly “support” her daughter’s choice. (They showed followup clips of the ceremony with Mom in attendance, much to the delight of everyone!)

The fight for truth and righteousness, especially in regards to homosexuallity, is only going to get more intense. As Christians, we must know what the scriptures say about sin and homosexuality and be willing to boldly speak the truth – especially to our own children!
