Am I the Only One That Thinks Kenneth Copeland is a Heretic?

We’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Lisa B attempt to defend Kenneth Copeland Ministries and his teachings about the atonement. I had been planning on posting some quotes Copeland has made over the years and now is as good a time as any to do this! I’ll post them up here and to demonstrate that I’m not the only one who thinks Copeland’s teachings are heretical….I’LL LET YOU GUYS BREAK THESE QUOTES DOWN BIBLICALLY. Have fun kids!!

“Jesus went into hell to free mankind from the penalty of Adam’s high treason…When His blood poured out it did not atone. Jesus spent three horrible days and nights in the bowels of this earth getting back for you and me our rights with God.” (Ken Copeland, Personal letter from Ken Copeland, Ft. Worth Texas, March 12, 1979. (D. R. McConnell, A Different Gospel, page 118)

“The Spirit of God spoke to me and He said, ‘Son, realize this. Now follow me in this and don’t let your tradition trip you up.’ He said, ‘Think this way – a twice-born man whipped Satan in his own domain.’ And I threw my Bible down…like that. I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘A born-again man defeated Satan, the firstborn of many brethren defeated him.’ He said, ‘You are the very image, the very copy of that one.’ I said, ‘Goodness, gracious sakes alive!’ And I began to see what had gone on in there, and I said, ‘Well now you don’t mean, you couldn’t dare mean, that I could have done the same thing?’ He said, ‘Oh yeah, if you’d had the knowledge of the Word of God that He did, you could have done the same thing, ’cause you’re a reborn man too.” (Dr. John MacArthur, “Charismatic Chaos,” page 337. Kenneth Copeland, “Substitution and Identification”)

“I was shocked when I found out who the biggest failure in the Bible actually is…The biggest one in the whole Bible is God…I mean, He lost His top-ranking, most anointed angel; the first man He ever created; the first woman He ever created; the whole earth and all the fullness therein; a third of the angels, at least – that’s a big loss, man….Now, the reason you don’t think of God as a failure is He never said He’s a failure. And you’re not a failure till you say you’re one.” (Ken Copeland, Audio-Clip “Christianity in Crisis,” Hank Hanegraaff)

“I’ve had ugly books written about me because I said that Jesus died spiritually, but the fact is, I didn’t say thatthe Bible said it. Jesus became our substitute. If he hadn’t died spiritually, then we could never have been made alive spiritually. But He did! On the cross, Jesus was separated from the glory of God. He allowed Himself to be made sin for us, and He became obedient to death. He went into the pit of hell and suffered there as though He was the One Who had committed the sin.” (Ken Copeland, “The Power of His Resurrection”)

“God’s purpose and plan–the deepest desire of His heart–is coming to pass. God is going to have a family of equals!” (Kenneth Copeland, “Fullness: God’s Plan For His Family,” BVOV Magazine, July & August 2004, page 32)

“If you stood Adam upside God, they look just exactly alike….If you stood Jesus and Adam side-by-side, they would look and act and sound exactly alike….The image is that they look just alike, but the likeness is that they act alike and they are alike….All of God’s attributes, all of God’s authority, all of God’s faith, all of God’s ability was invested in that man.”(Kenneth Copeland, Authority of the Believer IV (Fort Worth: Kenneth Copeland Ministries, 1987, audiotape #01-0304), side 1

“You can have what you say! In fact, what you are saying is exactly what you are getting now. If you are living in poverty and lack and want, change what you are saying. It will change what you have…Discipline your vocabulary. Discipline everything you do, everything you say, and everything you think to agree with what God does, what God says, and what God thinks. God will be obligated to meet your needs because of His Word….If you stand firmly on this, your needs will be met.” (D. R. McConnell, A Different Gospel, page 172. Ken Copeland, “The Laws of Prosperity,” page 98, 101)

“He [Jesus] allowed the devil to drag Him into the depths of hell….He allowed Himself to come under Satan’s control…every demon in hell came down on Him to annihilate Him….They tortured Him beyond anything anybody had ever conceived. For three days He suffered everything there is to suffer.” (Kenneth Copeland, “The Price of It All,” page 3.

“It takes money to preach the gospel. Jesus Himself knew that, and contrary to what some people think, His ministry was not a poor one. He had so much money coming in and going out through His ministry that He had to appoint a treasurer. His name was Judas.” (Kenneth Copeland, “From Faith to Faith A Daily Guide to Victory,” December 5)

  1. Hi Phil,

Another gospel entirely. Just goes to show you can dress it up but you can’t take it to town. It’s heresy.

  2. Kenneth Copeland is a heretic. Period. He has taught false doctrine for a very long time. One of the worst things is that people are so spiritually illiterate that they buy into what Copeland says.

    I like your site.

  3. Phil,

I recently did a presentation for my Religious Studies class on the Word of Faith Movement, so these quotes aren’t particularly new to me. Their theology never ceases to amaze me as to how low it’ll go to make ill-gotten profit. From the get-go, the WoF movement’s only interest has been money and making people happy – at the expense of Biblical truth. To hear that Copeland has an airport doesn’t surprise me – I personally know people who contributed £1000 to him bring his last Citation X plane.

He used to be a pilot for Oral Roberts, so I see where his fetish for planes comes from

  4. Ok,

    I’ll start here:

Quote: When His blood poured out it did not atone.

Rom 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Col 1:14 in whom we have redemption through His blood,* the forgiveness of sins.

Col 1:20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

Heb 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

Rev 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed* us from our sins in His own blood,

  5. He sure isn’t afraid to call it “a different gospel”.

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” — Galatians 1:8

His (and many more like him) teachings are dangerous and do not teach the truth of God’s Word.

  6. Christian News 5/24/04; p.2,… reported this a few years back…about Copeland :
” False prophets are in abundance in today’s world and occasionally these religious pretenders over play their hand and say too much. Kenneth Copeland did on December 12, 2001. At a dedication service Copeland asserted that one billion Muslims would be converted in the next few months. His exact words were, “ ‘And there are going to be multiplied millions upon millions; there’s going to be close to a billion people that have been trapped in that religion, that in the next few months are gonna come into the kingdom of God (cheering). That is gonna happen; you watch and see what I’m telling you…’ ”

Well, for those who are still waiting on this prophecy to come to pass, the timeline for it ended already… Copeland never apologized for his false prophecy.
Copeland is also reported to be a 33 degree Freemason. After examining the unscriptural oaths and allegiances to the “Light” that Freemasonry espouses, this does not sound like some thing for spiritual Christians to be a part of. It seems to me to be a dual loyalty issue… ( Luke 6:24)… or in Copeland’s case, a triple loyalty issue as he puts Mammon before God too. In the context of this verse, it is evident that Copeland’s eye is not single.

Copeland also gave credence to the ministry of ” Laughing Revival” evangelist (?) Rodney Howard-Browne back in 1995… In a video that I saw of their meeting, I believe which occurred at Oral Roberts Uninversity, it was one of the strangest exchanges I have ever seen, that went on between them. Have you ever seen this ?

Phil: Alan….thanks for this! You are a VERY welcome addition around here!
The whole Word of Faith movement and its origins are disturbing.

  7. Kenneth Copeland a heretic? That’s been confirmed and certified a thousand times over! I used to devour his books, mags and tapes, alongside Dollar’s and Dad Hagin’s.

Copeland preaches a different god (actually a Mormon god), a different Jesus (the authentic Jesus cleansed my sins with his shed blood and finished the work on the cross; no-one else’s blood could do). Copeland’s Jesus was not and did not claim to be God (in a prophecy he gave once). The authentic Jesus was fully God and fully man, and did claim to be God!

Phil: All things Copelands followers ignore….well said my Dude!

  8. Yes he is a gold plated heretic. He reminds me of a 1960’s cartoon puppet Howdy Doody. Big ears and a head to big for his body. The sad thing is, that he is the envy of thousands of want-a-be preachers.

Phil: Gold plated heretic? LOL that was good….I used to envy him too…20 years or so ago…then God pulled me out of that mess!

  9. I was part of the faith movement. Pastored a church for a few years, administrated another large church. God graciously saved me when I actually heard the gospel preached in the message true and false conversion from Ray Comfort. I can attest that the WOF messae is phoney and the error continues to grow. There is no understanding of how to interpret scripture, no discernment. I thank God He saw fit to save me and open my eyes.

Hi Big Al….Welcome to Theology Today!

You are not alone….many of us here have been in your shoes at one time or another.

  10. Hey Phil…
I’m having a good time cleaning out my bookshelves! Good grief…what a waste of money!

  11. Hi Dawn,

You made me laugh. I think all of us have gone through the “cleaning out the bookshelves” a few times. I know I certainly have.

  12. Dont u have anything better to do than write about what people are preaching on. Why dont u go start a church or something and preach what u want people to hear. Everyone is right in their own minds. Hitler thought he was right. KKK..lynched black people..I bet they thought they were right. Millions of women killed..those men thought they were right. Seriously, who are u to judge…GO AND START YOUR OWN MOVEMENT, RIGHT…GO TELL PEOPLE WHAT U BELIEVE IN AND CARRY YOUR FOLLOWERS WITH YOU…YOU KNOW WHAT U GUYS CAN EVEN LIVE LIKE THE MORMONS AND START YOUR OWN COMMUNITY….WAKE UP PEOPLE….WAKE UP. GET RID OF THE YOUR WRONG I’M RIGHT MENTALITY…You guys are looking for these teachers to make you whole…Yomi reading books living through men, go and find God yourself. These men are mere humans and you look to them as Gods, you then find a fault and they become imperfect and then u write about them. You talk about the bible and your judging people…GO FIND THAT PASSAGE ABOUT JUDGEMENT AND TYPE IT IN YOUR BLOG……and dont erase my comment…be fair for once.

Hi Vomit….you are really funny…..of course I’m going to publish your comment… are a perfect example of why this site exists…and will continue to exist…..

  13. I’m sorry that all these people feel that Kenneth Copeland is a heretic…only God truly knows. I know he is a man who stands and lives by the word of God and calls sin a sin, can the same be said in your life. So now we slam preachers who have prospered and been blessed by the fruits of his labor and by seeking Gods wisdom in their lives. God wishes that all his people to be prosperous and in health. NOT POOR AND SICK AND HAVE STINKIN THINKIN and slamming everyone that is living Gods will. The enemy (Satan) knows his time is short and will take every opportunity to tear the people of God apart and malign them. Just seek first the kingdom of God and ask HIm to reveal the truth to you. But you can only know and understand the truth by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior and being born again. Are you willing to take that step and see for yourself. Hallelujah and Praise God!!!

Phil: Hi Wilson…welcome to Theology Today. If you can’t tell from Copelands qoutes that he is a heretic…..then I don’t know what else to show you…

  14. Copeland is as false as they get. Unfortunately many are taken in by his false teachings.

  15. Heretic is an understatement. The ‘Faith Movement’ is a cult. My family was mixed up in it when I was a kid and my wife was mixed up in it before we met. And now, I’ve dedicated my life to exposing the lies and deception these ‘teachers’ espouse.

  16. When 95 percent of Christians do not have 5 minutes a day quite time with the Bible.. they are all bad sinners.. all of them

(Mark 10:19 KJV) Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

The too often misconception publicized by fundaments on the net too now is that a Prophet only foretells the future, and everything a false prophet does is false, and that he is not a God gifted person.. and this itself is false, not true. How ironical. Balaam was firstly a genuine Prophet of God, he communicated with , talked with God, but he did not always obey, or listen to him, for he next still did his own thing, like most of us today too, and that is what made him a false prophet, and so simply too are the many persons false Christians now too who follow his bad behavior, example, and rebel like the devil now as well. God is still really always displeased with all such negative motivational behaviors, acts of self centered persons, not Christ centered, not Holy spirit obedient.. as the Bible clearly, undeniably indicates now many times.

Surely now there are, have been much more false Teachers, false prophets, false pastors, disobedient Christians in all of the Historical, or present Evangelical, Christian, Protestant or Catholic churches, so then why pick on just these few Pentecostals now? And do tell me.. Let’s be fair and mention them all in all of the denominations now too.. or none at all… it is the mere bullies, bashers, cowards too who have a partial approach, soley bashing or promoting false hatred against the Pentecostals now mainly too, and this still is a further sign of their immoral approach. What about the bad too many evangelicals, Baptists, Alliance, Anglican, Reformed, Brethren, Mennonites, Lutheran pastors, persons even? Well?

  17. nonconformer,

That all or nothing at all thinking is short-sided thought. If there are seemingly “important” Christian leaders misleading and shipwrecking Christians, we must and are told by Paul to speak out against them. Failing to help because we cannot help everyone is ludicrous.

  18. This is just too much Phil. I had known a long time that Kenneth Copeland is a heretic, but never thought reading his lies will have this much effect on me. Had to stop reading before my heart would fail.

    Lord have mercy!!!
