Todd Bentley and the Florida Outpouring Part 3

The very first time I ever watched Todd Bentley I thought he was a former biker or gang banger, who after a very difficult life found Jesus. Look at the guy and tell me you wouldn’t have thought this yourself. I thought he was a guy who sat under some bad teaching and simply fell for it….as MOST of us have been guilty of during our walk with Christ.  I’m learning more and more about this fellow during the last few days and what I’ve discovered about this self appointed “revivalist” disturbs me greatly…..

Pruning Time….a video by Patricia King about Todd Bentley’s dark period where Bentley claims to have seen Jesus….this was a time where Bentley was struggling…..Bentley refers to this as a “dark night of the soul”….notice the tattoos and piercings…..

Now compare how Bentley looks in the following video….shot prior to this “dark night of the soul”….notice what Bentley doesn’t have…..

The following link shows Bentley tattooed and pierced and approximates all this desecration around 2005 or so….after the 18 month “dark night of the soul” Bentley alleges to have gone through….

Prior to Bentley’s “dark night of the soul” Bentley lacked tattoos or piercings…..then the craziness started…..and I’m beginning to wonder what type of “spirit” has invaded this man’s mind body and soul….

Ok….so Bentley decided to paint and pierce himself AFTER being in full time ministry….and after his alleged “dark night of the soul”….and for the life of me I can’t figure out why a Christian….let alone a minister…..would mar his flesh in the manner that he has done…..when Scripture is clear about this issue?

Lev 19:28 (ESV)

You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.

There are other events that have caused me great concern like the involvement of Paul Cain and Bob Jones .These two fellows have had serious moral issues in the past that can’t be neglected and should NOT be ignored. Why anyone would desire to be mentored or discipled by these two is anyone’s guess.

Serious red flags are waving here….yet people are willingly ignoring the warnings…avoiding good practical common sense…and flocking to what appears to be nothing more then manipulation and deceit brought about by unclean spirits masquerading as angels of light.

Wake up people! Run from these masqueraders and don’t look back! Please don’t allow these people to lay hands on you or pray for you or whatever they are claiming to do in the name of God! You are subjecting yourself to something you don’t want any part of…and risking your eternal soul in the process!

  1. Thanks for continuing to expose Todd Bentley and the people behind him. It appears to go back all the way to William Branham…then Paul Cain & the K.C. Prophets, along with many fellow-travelers along the way, like Rick Joyner, the Charisma Magazine, and the Laughing Revival proponents who are connected with the “Word of Faith” crowd… Whoops, I just linked Todd to the whole TBN network…hmmm. Well, you can see there are alot of similarities and interlocking relationships with questionable and unbiblical practices.

Speaking of unbiblical practices… what is this about Todd Bentley talking with Paul about third heaven and the authorship of the Letter to the Hebrews…? Isn’t Paul the Apostle DEAD ? Doesn’t the Bible forbid to COMMUNICATE with the DEAD ? I am sorry, but this is the definition of NECROMANCY. Check it out with the Scriptures ! If Bentley claims to be speaking with Paul, then he is communing with the DEAD, and is a necromancer ! Bentley is not talking with Paul, but the Bible says he is talking to Evil Spirits ! No wonder Bentley looks weird, he is a spiritualist.

When Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration, He was not talking with the DEAD (Moses & Elijah)… as he told His Disciples with him… “tell the VISION to no man…” But Todd does not qualify his visit with Paul as a Vision but a literal trip to heaven. And what is this stuff about Abraham co-authoring the Letter to the Hebrews…? Todd’s experience (?) about Paul is like Benny Hinn’s claim to have met and visited Kathryn Kuhlmann in heaven too ! This whole scenario is too
You can see what is next, as these type of revelations if given credibility, it will give validity to Marian Apparitions and the total scheme of Saint worship.

Thanks for letting me share some thoughts.

Phil: Patricia King speaks to the dead…probably why her and Bentley get along so well…don’t forget GOD TV is also heavily involved in this unbiblical fiasco as well….

  2. This is easy. You cant save people from a life of distruction unless you PRETEND you lived a wild life.

Funny how even when he wears long sleeve shirts he still manages to push up the sleaves to show his body art.

I am real curious to see exactly what he has pictured or written. Is it a few Bible verses with heavenly clouds and the sun breaking through? Or is it a skeleton wearing a leather jacket riding a Harley with flames coming out the back forming the words “high way to hell.

    Phil: What’s with the Harley shirts he wears? He seems fascinated with Harleys…the following link describes some of his tattoos;

  3. This is truly scary. I live in Florida, and let me tell you that this is no place to come for your spiritual health.

Phil: Very true…but a great place for tennis:)

  4. I dont know if you have been seeing my link about Todd Bentley ( but I have been talking to a few people who have been defending him and more and more, I can see what the problem is. They are letting their experinces determine what their doctrine is and not the other way round. Sound doctrine seems to take a back seat to their experinces and it is so deceiving, it breaks my heart

Phil: Saw your link…I agree….people who allow their “experiences” to dictate Scripture instead of Scripture dictating experience is always a bumpy road….been there done that and have the t-shirts to prove it!!!

  5. Hello, Phil:
Thought you and the kind contributors to your worthy blog might enjoy Dan Phillips’ new entry (13 May 2008) over at “Pyromaniacs” concerning the Florida revival, so-called.

  6. The Facts are that there nothing that is happening in Lakeland is unbiblical. We have already cited the verses for you. You bring up the Mormon’s erroneously- The lakeland revival is not offering a re-interpretation of scripture or alternate doctrines.

As for the Tattoo’s Phil, check out
    Romans 2:29
“But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.”

Paul goes on to tell them it is better to not be circumsized at all than to have the physical “letter of the law” and not the inner circumsion. Are you circumsized Phil? Would it be a tad bit ridiculous for me to bring up some verses from the books of the Law about circumsicion when the scripture is clear that santification is an inner position? Wouldn’t I be, like the Pharisee’s, missing the point a bit?

Do you remember the story of how David was picked as King of Israel? Samuel was looking at the son’s of Jesse-saw one who was tall and handsome-clean cut and God told him “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
    1 Samuel 16:7

It’s interesting to me that, upon looking at the man, you were able to conclude that he has ‘sat under some false teaching’. Does God operate by the wisdom of this world?

Whom do you think Jesus had in mind when he said this: ”
If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you…. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.” John 15:18-22

Seems like its possible to deny the power of God because of human understanding. Was Jesus not a Stumbling block?

    “The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
    Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
He will be as a sanctuary,
But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
    And many among them shall stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and taken.” Is 8:13-15

These red flags Phil, they are the same red flags that came up for the Pharisee’s about Jesus. They plotted to kill him-even while he was working healings-signs and wonders in the name of the Father.

You talk about Bob Jones and Paul Cain having moral issues. Hmm, Remember Jesus? I mean after all he hung out with sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes- MAN that made the pharisee’s angry! because of course, Men of God are not prone to sin are they phil…I mean forget about David and Bathsheba, Forget about Noah drunk after the flood, forget about moses losing his temper in the desert, forget about Peter denying his lord. The bible is clear that we are broken people! In need of the grace of God. NO AMOUNT OF OUTWARD HOLINESS CAN SAVE US. And often God chooses to demonstrate his power through the lowly, the weak, the foolish of this world. Tattoo wearing, Harley driving, Former Drug Addict fits that bill doesnt he? Have you missed the point of the Gospel entirely?
FUrthermore- Todd Bentley is a man, he is not God- but the most fatal error, the most abhorrant thing that you are saying Phil, is calling the work of the Holy Spirit the work of Satan. Just as addicts are set free- and people are spurned towards love of their creator. …. The Gospel is preached. The Bible is honoured. The works of Darkness are destroyed *Demons cannot say Jesus, A Kingdom divided against itself cannot stand As Jesus said when they accused him of casting out Demon’s by the power of the devil.
I will leave you with a verse from John The disciples just heard Jesus Speak about his flesh and blood being eaten in order to inherit eternal life *man those pharisee’s would be up in arms at that! John-6:61
“When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?”

  7. Andrew,

I’m amazed at your silliness…..well, not really:)

The tattoos are disturbing…..especially having them done while in ministry…..and more importantly after his “dark night of the soul”….

Bentley having visited heaven and meeting Paul is equally disturbing…..but at least he did clear up that pesky issue over who authored the Book of Hebrews:)

I’ve said all I need to say about this issue…..and have shown you biblically why I believe the way I do…..

It is interesting how many of Bentleys apologists often compare Bentley to Jesus or one of the great men of the Bible…..

  8. Phil I wasn’t comparing him to Bentley. I was trying to show you that God doesn’t look at the oustide. I think I have made my point.
Also I do not think that you really understand how Jesus upset the religious order of the day, how revolutionary he was, how he set it so we wouldnt get snared up in nit-picking but would see the truth in love.
Are you so afraid of this dark knight of the soul? The lord himself spent 40 days and 40 nights in a desert in much agony- yet above you resisted me showing how a teacher’s life actually conforms the way of our Lord. So perhaps the you will recall the story of Jonah and the whale- or Isaac serving under a harsh master for 12 years- Or Israel sent to Exile – Perhaps you have not read about Paul recieving a thorn in the side-from the lord- I could tack “dark night of the soul” on those episodes, but I know that, of course red flags would be waving eh man.

Are you even reading the same bible as me Phil? I know that this is an hour of elevated spiritual attack- that the devil is out to decieve whom he may-even the elect *if possible. But you will know the works of darkness when you see it. I guarantee darkness will not be an exaltation of Jesus as Lord and Savior as based in the bible! turn on oprah if you want to see new age!

So anyway- I haven’t resorted to calling you silly, or a fruit loop, but you have been doing this to me the whole time. I’ve quoted verse after verse of scripture to you- you haven’t engaged a single one.
I am showing you that the things you have brought up are all in the bible- Not trying to say he is equal to jesus or some nonsense that you turned it into. About the Paul in heaven stuff- Again I ask have you read from genesis to Revelation? tremendouse spiritual activity- was not Elijah and Moses walking with Jesus at his transfiguration? The spirit of Samuel also came out of the ground- does not God decide when to SEND one of these- TODD never conjured up paul-never prayed to meet him- THAT is necromancy do you see the distinction?

We will agree to disagree I guess. None of you have leveled a significant charge against my arguments or the Florida revival, you have simply agreed that Todd Bentley displeases your eyes and that the whole charismatic movement gives you the jitters- that satan is hiding behind every bush-should we spend all our time speaking out critically? Is this the call of the gospel? or is it to Preach CHRIST.
Do you remember what Paul said when he was in Prison and the phillipians wrote to tell him that many were preaching Christ out of impure motives?
“What does it matter, however? In any case Christ is preached–either perversely or in honest truth; and in that I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.”
    Phillipians 1:18

Paul Rejoices that Christ is being preached! WOAH eh! What a Powerful Name!! what a Powerful God we serve- Are you actually going to ascribe so much power to the Devil that you think He can PREACH CHRIST and it not damage his cause??
I’m sorry my friends but you misunderstand the power of the gosepl…and if you are SO CONVINCED that TODD BENTLEY is some type of serpentile manipulator- then you should rejoice anyway because he preached christ every night!!

Phil: Andrew…you are reading into my comments….I never called you “fruit loopy” what I said was “leading people down the fruit loop trail)…what you have done is called eisegesis….you made my statements to mean something different then what I actually said….as I suspect you do when you attempt to interpret the Scriptures….which is why I don’t address them….

  9. I think there is a more then few things wrong with receiving Tattoos & Piercings, after we accept Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior…

First off when we decide to follow Jesus we no longer “Own” our bodies… We now belong to God… Not Ours But HIS. As it states in…

    1 Corinthians 6:19
    Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

We also know that God never changes and His Word is Truth, and we know that there is more then a few places in the Bible that states that tattoos & Piercing are not good. And even though we are free from the Law… Jesus himself states this about the Law….

    Matthew 5:17-20
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

    John 14:21
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

So I do not believe that even though we are free from the Law that it gives us the right to do as we will with the Temple of God.

Secondly Tattooing & Piercing is a form of demonic desecration. I know that seems harsh… but what we do before we come to Christ is just that… Before and therefore Forgiven as it states in…

    2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

But after we come to Christ we belong to Him as stated above. So our body is a gift from God that we should Treasure. And when we do ANYTHING that destroys the body… it is a form of demonic desecration.

    In Love.

Phil: Hi Frank…welcome to Theology Today!

Well said….last night Bentley was wearing a black t-shirt with the words “Jesus loves me and my tattoos”…..oh brother!!!

  10. It is so obvious that those who are against this move of God already have all of God they want. They already know everything about God they want to know. They are stuck right where they have always been and unless they have an encounter with the Holy Spirit, they will still be in the same place when they die. If you do feel that you are growing in your relationship with the Lord, tell me what you think it will look like in 6 months, 9 months or even 2 years from now. What will be different in your walk with God in the coming months or years than it is now? How will you know that you are really growing in the Lord?

It was amazing to me that during a series of meetings at a Baptist church in snellville GA. they had to offer a raffel for “Free Gas” to get people to come to the Church. In Lakeland I have heard nothing but come if you want to be touched by God. Now theres a question for you, would you like to be touched by God? When you really go after God and simply tell the Lord that you want ALL that He has for you and then take off all of YOUR requirments of what you think it will look like and then watch what God will do. It will blow your mind. Generally it is FEAR that will keep you from what God wants to do in your life.
I for one know that there is more, more , more of God that I have yet to experience. Maybe you are satisfied where you are but I know there is so much more. DO YOU REALLY WANT IT?

  11. Hi Andrew,

A question derived from your statements here….

(quote) The Gospel is preached. The Bible is honoured.

I have watched about 6-7 sessions of Todd and I have failed to see him open a Bible, much less preach from it.

Maybe you can enlighten me…What has been the scriptural topic of his Gospel preaching and when was it done?

Also, has he edified his audience with scriptural support for his “visions” and “angels”? Where in scripture is there a “female” angel? I can save you some time here – there isn’t one.

  12. Matt,

I for one know that there is more, more , more of God that I have yet to experience.

Experience is the appropriate comment of this movement. Experience trumps/superceeds God’s Word, thus scripture is no longer needed. Have you ever wondered why the stories get more and more unbelievable as time goes by…well, when you have nothing to test it against…anything goes.

You go right on having your experiences….and I’ll keep subjecting my to the test of scripture.

  13. Hello ya’ll,

I just want to point out that according to scripture it is not allowed to
tattoo or cut your skin for the DEAD!
‘You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.’
And please read the entire chapter, in the correct context.

Oh and when you judge with the old testament law, you will be condemned by it!!! Paul writes about it, search the bible…
Anyone here who lives 100% by the old testament law??

Greetings, peace be with you and God bless ya’ll!

  14. No, Samuel, we don’t live 100% by Mosaic Law because Jesus did… and was found worthy to be the sacrafice for us. Only Jesus Himself was capable of such a perfect and magnificent feat, which is why He is the mighty Savior.

The WoF movement preys upon those who are weak in faith. They are not content with quietly searching and learning, but must instead have a physical manifestation of some sort to get them through day by day by day.

As we all know, the Scriptures tell us that without faith it is impossible to please God. But, I ask, how much faith does a person really have if they depend upon physical manifestations? Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen. This verse alone condemns the physical manifestations. Are we to believe what is seen, or believe God will keep His Word? Abraham BELIEVED, and it was accounted unto him as righteousness. There was no evidence that Sarah would conceive, or that she could…but Abraham still believed she WOULD even though there was no physical proof of it at the time.

So, we, as believers, believe that God will keep and perform all of His promises which were given to us in His Word. Don’t cheapen God by attributing to Him vulgar manifestations such as raucous laughter, barking like dogs, or knocking people flat of their backs. God is very holy and just. Let’s remember that.

  15. What was most disturbing to me was a comment I heard Todd Bentley say last week on the God.TV. He was doing his “impartation of the anointing” thing and hyping the poor people into believing that he really had something to impart. He said, “people say to me, ‘Todd, I know you are holy and soverign,'” Though he was quoting a follower, he was doing it to try to add to his own exaltation. It would be like a piano player addressing an audience and saying, “people tell me I play like, Jerry Lee” In a very real sense quoting the words of your followers is the same as saying them yourself. No real man of God would quote some poor ignorant follower who called him, “Holy and soverign.”
So what is the issue? No man is soverign. Only Jesus Christ manifest in the flesh had the right to claim to be God. Bentley has crossed over a line that Satan fed to Eve in the garden, “you shall be as god.” He has accepted to same lie that Lucifer voiced when he said, “I will ascend, I will make my throne above the stars, I will be like the Most High.” Throughout history those men who claim deity have come to a horrible end. Remember Herod who was eaten of worms!! How anyone can watch more than 10 minutes of this “revival” and not conclude it is false is beyond my understanding. People are so desperate to believe that “Christ is in the desert” that thay will follow the braying of an–at best–confused man.

  16. do you know what you are saying about this man is exactly what people said about Jesus thousands of years ago. What about all the healings going on you can’t tell me that they’re false too!!!!! I think people need a rude awakening we can make the bible nice and flowery but it isn’t like that. Gary V if Florida is so bad all the more reason for revival to be there don’t you think? One more thing I agree with Andrew when he says that if you think Todd Bentley is demonic then he hasn’t done the deveil any favours at all. I’ve been in meetings where the preacher hasn’t picked up his bible once – does that make him demonic aswell?????

  17. The thing that seems to disturb me here is all who support Todd Bentley are consistant in comparing him to Jesus. I know of no man that compares with Jesus. Jesus was and is the Messiah. Todd Bentley is a far cry from the humility of Jesus or any of the new testament writers. His arrogance and lack of reverence for the Holy Spirit are saddening.

  18. Jr you clearly have not been watching the same programme i have, to be flat on your back in reverence and awe of the holy spirit is something to be experienced. No Todd is not Jesus but he preaches christ and him crucified. Is that not the will of God – if it takes a tv big sound stage loads of musicians and a preacher covered in tattoos and piercings to do that then bring it on. No WE are not anywhere near the humility of Jesus but it s a direction to try and head for.

“Let he who boasts boast in the Lord” which I have only ever seen Todd doing. God saved him from a life of sin and ongoing suffering why shouldn’t he boast in that.

Phil: Hi Claire……do you have the date and Scripture references as to when Bentley preached Christ and Him crucified?

Also…we generally capitalize Christ and Him…..and the Holy Spirit just as you capitilize Todd:)

  19. We are not supposed to be flat on our back reverencing the Holy Spirit. According to God’s Word, the Holy Spirit doesn’t speak of Himself, nor does He draw attention to Himself. He directs attention to JESUS, God’s only begotten Son, the central focus, the corner stone of our faith. If you take your eyes off of Jesus and put them on another, even the Holy Spirit, you fall into error.

  20. I wonder how many souls those who are slandering and gossiping have led to Christ. What are they doing, sitting around on their lazy rears doing nothing but typing on the net, slandering and condeming those who are preaching God’s word, leading people to Jesus and healing the sick, etc. How many revivals have those who slander led? How many times have they been to Africa, India etc and led thousands to salvation? I have pages upon pages of notes where Todd has read scriptures and taught from the Holy Bible. I think these people have jealousy and envy. The whole time I watch the revival everyone speaking gives Jesus ALL the glory the honor and praise. Jesus is continously lifted up and praised. Satan hates that thousands are giving their lives to Jesus Christ and being born again and these slanderers are puppets in his hand.

Phil: How have I slandered Todd Bentley? What’s written here and elsewhere on this site are the wolves own published statements which they seem pretty proud to share…..which hardly can be considered gossip.

  21. I think the answer is BALANCE: a critique of a meeting doesn’t always have to be so black or white. I mean, yes – if someone is sinning, or if someone is teaching damnable heresy, he ought to be admonished – and if he reforms, receive him, or if he won’t hear you, you may need to withdraw from him for a season (that’s only if he’s willfully sinning or teaching damnable heresy). But what if it’s not so serious as to affect salvation? what if the person is doing it ignorantly but sincerely? what if he is just immature? what if at least some people are nevertheless actually getting saved? In such cases, can’t we affirm what’s good whilst at the same time correcting what’s lacking? Maybe we don’t always have to entirely write someone off just because we don’t like everything we see.

Phil: Todd Bentley claimed to have visited Paul in heaven and when questioned he removed this claim from his website….Bentley kicks people and claims the Holy Spirit told him to do so….Bentley may claim all of what is going on in Lakeland is in Jesus’ name yet he never seems to get around to preaching about Jesus instead he natters on and on about “fire” and “power” and “hot coals”… can we receive the Holy Spirit if we don’t hear about Jesus?
