The Heresy of the Universalists

I’ve never understood the Universalists. I understand their beliefs…I just can’t understand how they could believe that “everyone’s saved” and there’s no “literal hell” when Scripture is crystal clear that not everyone is saved and there is indeed a place called hell. Can they be Christians and hold to such beliefs? 

 John 3:15-17 KJV 

15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.


Correct me if I’m wrong here but if the Universalists beliefs are true (all are saved and hell doesn’t exist) what would be the point of believing in Jesus if everybody is already saved? Why say that those who don’t believe would “perish” if they weren’t going to?

Acts 2:21 tells us that all who call upon the Name of the Lord will be saved….John 3:17 states that those who don’t believe are condemned because they don’t believe in the Name of Jesus. Universalists believe in Jesus….they just don’t believe He’s the ONLY way to eternal life. What happens to those who don’t believe in the Name? 

Matthew 13:38-42 KJV

The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39  The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. 41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth 

Contrary to Universalists beliefs, hell is a very real place….at least according to Scripture. The passage above is very specific…the children of the devil will be gathered out and cast into the furnace of fire. The following passage describes these children of the devil; 

1Corinthians 6:9-11 KJV

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.


If the Universalists are to be believed the people resembling the passage above are saved and headed to heaven….whether they accept Christ as their Savior or not. I guess the bible means nothing to those who espouse the Universalists doctrine. No sanctification necessary….forget about justification…..WE ARE ALL SAVED!!!!  

According to the bible, the Universalists belief system is hogwash. There is a price for sin and it is death (Romans 6:23). Those who believe the Universalists rubbish have no fear of God (Matthew 10:28) and will face everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46) everlasting fire (Matthew 25:41) and will be tormented eternally (Revelation 14:10).  

The Universalists doctrines would be laughable…..if they weren’t so dangerous. For Universalists to believe that all are saved whether they believe in Jesus or not directly contradicts Scripture making it complete and total heresy. Their denial of hell is just wishful thinking and those who continue in their beliefs will get a fiery wake-up call of which there is neither redemption nor escape.  

The Universalists shouldn’t even be calling them selves Christians nor should anyone who associates in any way shape or form with the blatant and dangerous heresy known as Universalism (2Corinthians 6:14-17).

    You have said all Phil. Their doctrine is hogwash. And the scripture is crystal clear on the issue.

    I won’t be surprised when people start coming with their ‘you are being judgemental’ crap.

    Phil, this article on universalism is great. I doubt most here understand that universalism is on the rise and what a God mocking belief system it is. I have battled with them before, so I thought I would add a little here to your collection of texts. I ran across my first universalists about 4 years ago, so with your indulgence I thought I would add some texts I used against them and talk a little about what texts they use to promote their lies.

    Here are some additional texts in rebuttal.

    Dan 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

    Matt 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

    Now a universalist will make eternal life mean one thing and eternal punishment mean another in Matt 25 yet the Greek word for eternal here is the same word. They will jump through hoops trying to seperate these and say the punishment is NOT eternal just that God will always punish the wicked, but only for a short time…and this occurs after they die. They do admit they have no text to support what happens after death but rely on Rev 21:25 where the “gates” of the city are NOT shut, but completely ignore Rev 21:27 or Rev 22:15.

    When out and about on blogs or lists, people need to watch for those who are posting about the “all in alls”. Universalists love those texts and are always seeking others to agree that “all means all” without qualification while omitting “Those In Christ”. I have even called some of them universalists and they will deny it by claiming it isn’t “comprehensive” enough and plead innocence. Well, 100% is 100%. There is no such thing as 110%. It’s an evasion tactic. They do like to redefine their position and comprehensive is one of the buzz words I have run across.

    The key text I use against them is:

    Luke 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

    In these times I can understand why some would find universalism attractive but it is humanist centered. Once they sell this belief then the focus is removed from Christ and their center focus of teaching becomes how YOU can become a better person and they set out to show you how. CHRIST IN YOU is no longer relevant, He takes a back seat, and you won’t find a lot of mention of Him after that point. They reimage Christ into human form with human emotions. They love to post about babies, children and abused spouses, to appeal to emotions.

    Pastors or seasoned members here may think they are an easy rebuttal but when you are dealing with one in an arena of “babes” it isn’t as easy a battle as you would like to believe and the proof texts to rebut it need to be used over and over and over again.

    I am very good at being able to place my self into a position and looking at it from their eyes and I must say that when I did that using the universalist proof texts, it was absolutely the hardest one to step back out of. If it hadn’t been for these proof texts, I would have been seduced. The biggest mistake we can make is underestimating their arguments. I can’t recommend highly enough, that should you run across one that you get another seasoned Christian to work with you in rebuttal. Universalists will bury you in lengthy posts trying to wear you down and you need to plan on a seige. Taking their most blatant error, exposing it and repeating support texts will eventually make them “hiss”. When that happens, the battle is over.

    Jesus spoke of the sheep and the goats. It’s the “sheep” that hear his voice.

  3. Phil great article I don’t understand how people come up with this nonsense. I always thought of it this way; if everybody was save why did Christ have to come to earth?

  4. Dorothy is a warrior. Those proof texts are essential for simply witnessing in general since most churched Americans seem convinced no one will go to hell or at least that they won’t . I took down the Daniel verse and the Matthew verse.
